Out for Health & Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes

In 1988, Planned Parenthood in Ithaca provided it’s first in-school LGBT anti-bullying workshop and since then has been a leader in providing LGBT programming, training, advocacy, and resources. In 1993 the organization’s Board of Director’s approved a policy to formalize their commitment to LGBT civil rights, community education, and increasing public awareness about sexual orientation and gender identity. Beginning in 2008 Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes (PPSFL) was awarded grant funding from the New York State Department of Health LGBT Health and Human Services Unit to support and enhance its regional LGBT Health and Wellness project, Out for Health.

The Program

Out for Health provides outreach, education, and information to LGBT people, their healthcare providers, and the community at large about the importance of inclusive, welcoming, and respectful care for LGBT people. We provide social and support groups and programs for youth and adults in rural communities, transgender hormone therapy and preventive healthcare services, advocacy, policy guidance, and training for schools, community groups, care providers, and businesses about being LGBT-inclusive and -af rming. We are proud to have been the first Planned Parenthood affliate in New York State to offer transgender hormone therapy and preventive care services. The program was honored with an Achievement Award in 2014 from
the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA) in recognition of contributions to the LGBT community for exemplary commitment to improving the quality of health services for transgender people in upstate New York.

Connecting the dots.

Planned Parenthood is a proud member of the Causes in Common Coalition, an organizing initiative that brings together activists in the LGBT Liberation and Reproductive Justice Movements to work against common opponents and toward the shared goal of equal rights.
